NAEBA Endorses WV Ag Commissioner's Stance on Cervid Farming

Letter of Appreciation Sent to West Virginia Department of Agriculture with Offer to Help

HOWARD LAKE, MN- The North American Elk Breeders Association has recently sent a letter to West Virginia Agriculture Commissioner Walt Helmick thanking him for his interest in expanding the farmed deer industry. Last week, media outlets reported the commissioner's interest in shifting deer farming oversight to his agriculture department in hopes of growing the industry. The commissioner cited the potential advantages of developing the state's agriculture industry by utilizing the markets created by deer farming.

NAEBA sought to thank the commissioner for his comments and offer their support. NAEBA Executive Director Travis Lowe said it is imperative the department know NAEBA and other cervid associations are willing to help. Lowe stated, "It's great to see state leaders look at our industry and see the benefits it can provide to the state's economy and local jobs. We need to help in any way we can."

The article noted the economic advantages produced by deer farming in nearby states, notably Pennsylvania, generating $80 million, annually.
